I went shopping but the mall turned out to be closed.

I thought nobody was home but everybody turned out to be (home).


used to do= (用于过去持续或经常发生的事)曾经

When I was a child, I used to go to school at 8 a.m

When I was a child, I used to go to bed at 9 pm.

My brother used to be a bad student, but one day he turned out to be smart.

can –> could + do (not ‘doing’)

can = be able

I thought = I used to think

I used to think my friend couldn’t swim but she turned out to be able.

I used to think China was dangerous but it turned out to be safe.

I used to think China was small but it turned out to be big.

/!\ I used to =/= I am used to (我习惯了)

What is this meant for? 这个有什么用?

Wearing clothes is meant to look nice.

Going to school is meant to learn knowledge.

These clothes are not meant for sport.

These shoes are meant for business.

This phone is meant for the office; it is meant to call people.

meant for + something (sport, the office, business)

meant to + do (learn, call, look)
