Rule: They go BEFORE the verb
I often go out.
I never smoke.
I don’t ever smoke.
/!\Exception: AFTER the verb [be]

However, you can put them at the beginning or the end of longer sentences for emphasis 强调
Usually, Peter arrives early to work.
I go to work by bus, sometimes.
