The writing style is very informal and colloquial (口语的) = spoken

a grain 谷粒

when you eat rice, you actually eat grains

a grain of salt = 一个盐的谷粒

Take something with a grain of salt = 不会信以为真,半信半疑的

This person is new at the job. You should take his opinion with a grain of salt

walk = walk up the street = walk down the street

go = go up the street = go down the street

throw-up = vomit (动词,名词)

Yesterday, I was sick and I threw up. There was some throw-up everywhere.

She won’t change her mind = Changing her mind won’t happen = There is no changing her mind

a dork = someone not very smart

I feel like a dork = I am afraid that I look stupid

I can’t care less / I couldn’t care less = I don’t care

I can’t care less what other people say.

Even if I tried, I couldn’t care less, because I already don’t care at all.

I could become a doctor  if I wanted. (it’s a dream)

I could have = in the past

I could have become a doctor when I was younger


I could = dream (present)

I could have = dream (past)

You often use “should have” and “could have” to express regrets 后悔

I’m sorry I forgot to call you. I should have remembered

I’m sorry I arrived late this morning. I could have called you before the meeting.

I am sorry I didn’t tell you I was sick last night. I should have told you.


I couldn’t care less = I don’t care (present)

I couldn’t have cared less = I didn’t care (past)

Rowley and Leland couldn’t have cared less that Mom came with me = They didn’t care that Mom came with me

figure = assume, guess, 估计

figure out = understand, discover, 发现,理解

-Where is Frank? -I don’t know, I figure he’s at the bathroom

I can’t figure out this math problem

stick / stuck / stuck = 粘贴

stick around = 粘在旁

Do you mind if I stick around and wait for her ?你介意我待在这里等她吗?。

gonna = going to

I’m gonna watch a movie

right = exactly 恰好

He walked in right when I walked out = He walked in exactly when I walked out 当我出去的时候,他恰好进来。
