Vocabulary


Attack (n/v): 1- to try to hurt or defeat using violence. 2- to criticize someone strongly.
E.g.: He was attacked and seriously injured by a group of criminals.
E.g.: She wrote an article attacking the judges and their conduct of the trial.
Confrontation (adj): 1- causing or involving angry disagreement.
E.g.: You should try to be less confrontational if you want to work well in a team.
Diplomatic (adj): 1- acting in a way that does not cause other people to be offended.
E.g.: Ask him nicely – be diplomatic.
Self-destructive (adj): 1- (of behavior or actions) likely to harm or kill you:
E.g.: His self-destructive behavior is what put him in this situation.
Spite (n): 1- a feeling of anger towards another person that makes someone want to annoy, upset, or hurt them, especially in a small way. 2- to intentionally annoy, upset, or hurt someone.
E.g.: He’s the sort of man who would let down the tires on your car just out of/from spite.
E.g.: I almost think he died without making a will just to spite his family.
Indulge (v): 1- to allow yourself or another person to have something enjoyable, especially more than is good for you.
E.g.: I love champagne but I don’t often indulge myself.
Podcast (n): 1- a radio program that is stored in a digital form that you can download from the internet and play on a computer or on an MP3 player.
E.g.: I’m listening to a podcast on Chinese history.
Cutting off the nose to spite the face” is an expression used to describe a needlessly self-destructive over-reaction to a problem: “Don’t cut off your nose to spite your face” is a warning against acting out of pique, or against pursuing revenge in a way that would damage oneself more than the object of one’s anger.
