Vocabulary
Admission (n): 1- the money that you pay to enter a place.
E.g.: How much do they charge for admission?
E.g.: The admission fee is €5.
Ban (n): 1- to forbid (= refuse to allow) something, especially officially:
E.g.: The film was banned (= the government prevented it from being shown) in several countries.
E.g.: She was banned from driving for two years.
Alcoholic (n/adj): 1- a person who is unable to give up the habit of drinking alcohol very often and in large amounts. 2- containing alcohol.
E.g.: His father was an alcoholic, so he had a very difficult childhood.
E.g.: Could I have something non-alcoholic, like orange juice, please?
Welfare (n): 1- help given, especially by the state or an organization, to people who need it, especially because they do not have enough money.
E.g.: Your taxes pay for welfare benefits such as unemployment and sickness pay.
E.g.: After her month’s sick leave, she was asked to come back to see the company’s welfare officer.
Overtime (n): 1- (time spent working) after the usual time needed or expected in a job.
E.g.: They’re doing/working overtime to get the job done on time.
E.g.: Everyone is on overtime (= being paid extra for working after the usual time) this weekend.
Overwork (v): 1- to (cause someone to) work too much. (adj: Overworked)
E.g.: You look exhausted – I hope they’re not overworking you.
E.g.: I’m overworked and underpaid.
Compete (v): 1- to try to be more successful than someone or something else.
E.g.: It’s difficult for a small shop to compete against/with the big supermarkets.
E.g.: Both girls compete for their father’s attention.
Filmmaker (n): 1- someone who is in charge of making a film.
E.g.: The filmmaker traveled to Japan, where she worked on a documentary about Japanese culture.
Salaryman (n): 1- a Japanese business worker who works very long hours everyday.
