Vocabulary

Remodel (v): 1- to give a new shape or form to something.
E.g.: We’ve completely remodeled the kitchen.

Renovate (v): 1- to repair and improve something, especially a building.
E.g.: He renovates old houses and sells them at a profit.

Immigrant (n): 1- a person who has come to a different country in order to live there permanently.
E.g.: Illegal immigrants are sent back across the border if they are caught.

Immigrate (v): 1- to come to live in a different country.
E.g.: He immigrated with his parents in 1895 and grew up on Long Island.

Expatriate / Expat (n): 1- someone who does not live in their own country.
E.g.: A large community of expatriates has settled there.

Migrate (v): 1- When an animal migrates, it travels to a different place, usually when the season changes. 2- If people migrate, they travel in large numbers to a new place to live temporarily.
E.g.: These animals migrate annually in search of food.
E.g.: Mexican farm workers migrate into the US each year to find work at harvest time.

Migrant Worker (n): 1- a person who either migrates within their home country or outside of it in order to pursue work such as seasonal work.
E.g.: Many migrant workers in the country are living in very bad conditions.

Refugee (n): 1- a person who has escaped from their own country for political, religious, or economic reasons or because of a war.
E.g.: Thousands of refugees fled from Syria into Europe over the past few years.

Elite (n): 1- the richest, most powerful, best-educated, or best-trained group in a society
E.g.: He accused the government to only work in favor of the economic elites.

Elitist (adj): 1- organized for the good of a few people who have special interests or abilities.
E.g.: Many remember sport at school as elitist, focusing only on those who were good at it.
