Vocabulary

Soap opera (n): 1- a series of television or radio programs about the lives and problems of a particular group of characters. The series continues over a long period and is broadcast (several times) every week.
E.g.: The new soap opera will be broadcast five times each day.
E.g.: I don’t have time to watch soap operas.

Illiterate (adj): 1-  a person who cannot read and write.
E.g.: A surprising percentage of the population is illiterate.

Midwife (n): 1- a person, usually a woman, who is trained to help women when they are having a baby.
E.g.: The midwife was very helpful and made Anna feel much better.

Maternal (adj): 1- behaving or feeling in the way that a mother does towards her child, especially in a kind. 2- related to a mother’s side of the family.
E.g.: She is very maternal towards her employees.
E.g.: Her maternal grandmother (= mother’s mother) is still alive.

Paternal (adj): 1- of or like a father. 2- related to a father’s side of the family.
E.g.: He’s very paternal (= showing the affectionate feelings of a father) with the baby.
E.g.: My paternal grandparents (= my father’s parents) were Irish.
