Vocabulary

turf (n): 1-the surface layer of land on which grass is growing, consisting of the grass and the soil in which its roots grow, or a piece of this that is cut from the ground and is usually rectangular
2-the area that a group considers its own:
E.g.: Judges feel that the courtroom is their private turf.
E.g.: The gymnastics team won the championship on their home turf.

slate (n): 1-a dark grey rock that can be easily divided into thin pieces, or a small, thin piece of this used to cover a roof

wince (v): 1-to show pain suddenly and for a short time in the face, often moving the head back at the same time:
E.g.: Did I hurt you? – I thought I saw you wince.
E.g.: It makes me wince even thinking about eye operations.

abbey (n): 1-a building where monks or nuns live or used to live.
E.g.: Some abbeys are now used as churches:
E.g.: Westminster Abbey
E.g.: We glimpsed the ruined abbey from the windows of the train.

Magna Carta (Libertatum): a document signed in 1215 by King John of England that gave certain political and legal rights to some English people. It is often seen as the start of the legal system and the rule of law in England.
