TheĀ destructiveĀ impactĀ of fast fashionĀ onĀ the environment is widely documented. So how can we, asĀ consumers, reduce ourĀ fashion footprint? One obvious answer is to buy less. Another is to buy clothes that have been moreĀ sustainablyĀ made, using organic and recycled materials.Ā HiringĀ clothes is another way to get new pieces for ourĀ wardrobe. But buying second-hand may be the simplest solution and aĀ trendĀ that is growing fast.

According to the Boston Consulting Group, second-hand clothes areĀ projectedĀ to make up 27 per cent of customersā€™ wardrobes by 2023. By 2030, the second-hand clothing market is projected to be twice the size ofĀ fast fashion, according to a global report by Thredup and GlobalData. So, it seems, the next ten years will see theĀ resale marketĀ grow fast, and this is in part because we now have more options than simply buying fromĀ charity shopsĀ andĀ jumble sales. Online sites are making it easier to both buy and sellĀ pre-lovedĀ items.

It also helps that the perception of pre-loved clothing has changed. Dr Amna Khan, senior lecturer in consumer behaviours andĀ retailĀ at Manchester Metropolitan University, said ā€˜itā€™s now becomeĀ trendyĀ to wear second-handā€™ and itā€™s no longer ā€˜a case of only buying it if you canā€™t afford anything elseā€™. The changingĀ valuesĀ of shoppers is even being seen inĀ celebrity culture, with television personalities, such as contestants on the popular UK TV show Love Island, promoting second-hand clothing.

Not everyone is convinced that these changes in shopping habits will do enough to reduce our fashion footprint. The charityĀ WrapĀ tells people toĀ repairĀ andĀ revampĀ clothes they already have in their wardrobe before buying new ones, even if they are second-hand. But itā€™s clear that some consumers now want to consume less and make more environmentally friendly choices when they do buy. The fashion industry is therefore having to change, and the second-hand market is the star of the show.

Some argue that studying at a foreign university is better than getting a degree in their mother country. I agree with people who hold this view. First of all, studying at a foreign university can broaden our horizon and we can get to know/experience different cultures. Also, studying abroad can expand our social circles and improve our independence.
However, domestic education only focuses on academic performance and ignores studentsā€™ social ability and physical exercises as well as psychological problems.

First, studying in a new environment can broaden our horizons. Being in a classroom with people from all over the world gives us a chance to make friends and work on projects together. In this process, we may have coffee and dinner with each other and exchange our ideas about the country we are in. For example, when I was in college in New York, I went to a local church every Sunday to observe how Christian rituals were held. I learned about the history, age group in a local church.

Homework

For success in a future job, the ability to relate well to people is more important than studying hard in school.
