F2F Class Notes March 15th (Joseph)

Vocabulary

Segregate – to separate yourself from people (e.g. It is common for Chinese exchange students to segregate themselves from the locals and only hang out with other Chinese students when they go abroad to study.)

Speaking exercise

Edited:

When we go to another country we can choose to follow the local customs or just keep our own. If people choose to adapt their lifestyle or habits into the local lifestyle, maybe they will feel a little bit uncomfortable in the beginning, however, the advantages are that after some time they can easily get used to the local environment and make friends with the locals. If we choose to keep our own customs, the positives are that we can keep our traditions alive but the problem is that you might become segregated. For me I prefer to follow the customs of the new country because when I went to paris for an exchange program, at first I lived the same life I had in China. However, I soon felt that it was really hard for me to make friends with French people, so I chose to hang out with more French students and try to follow their lifestyles. Then, I found that I was improving my French speaking and I quickly felt that my life was much more comfortable in Paris.
