F2F Class Notes (JJ)

Homework:

Today I watched one episode of ‘Very British Problems’. I’ve learned that Brits always say one thing but think of the opposite. For example, they would tell a guest ‘Make yourself at home.’ But he is just reminding you that it’s NOT your home and you should behave yourself. I think the root of this contradiction is that Brits want to show their politeness all the time. If they are straightforward, they may appear impolite and hurt others. This core spirit leads to many other problematic behaviours. For example, Brits are unlikely to show their anger right away if they are bothered in public places. If someone is talking loudly on a train, Brits will choose to bear and tweet their anger. Brits know how to behave harmoniously and they are maintaining this connection all the time. But in their heart, they just want to be alone. Brits hope you get their ideas. Only in that way can they feel easy and comfortable. If you don’t know Brits, you may find them hard to please. But I think the best way to establish a relationship with a Brit is to know the sense of privacy behind their politeness. Don’t do what Brits tell you to, because they are so good at not getting to the point.

Revised:

I’ve learned that Brits always say one thing but think otherwise. I think the root of this contradiction is that Brits want to show their politeness at times. Brits will choose to bear and tweet their anger instead. Brits know how to behave harmoniously and they try their best to stay composed/carry themselves with class and elegance at all times. But deep down/truthfully/the truth is, (…). Only in that way can they feel at ease. But I think the best way to establish a relationship with a Brit is to respect the sense of privacy behind their politeness/the importance of privacy for them. (…) they are not great at getting to the point.
