Mahjong is a very common board game in China. We call it “Zhu Chang Cheng” means build up the great wall, most of Chinese people know it.
Invite 3 of your friends, sit together, then play mahjong, you will have a wonderful day. There are total 144 tiles for one set of mahjong with different varieties. The main varieties are CIRCLES, BAMBOOS and CHARACTERS, each variety has different number from one to nine. Other 7 varieties represent the different direction and meanings. And the rest are 8 flower tiles.
The rules of mahjong are various, but more interesting. we defined to them different name, based on different rules. Below I will introduce how to play Shanghai Mahjong, because I only understand the rules of Shanghai Mahjong. Of cause, there are Sichuan Mahjong, Guangdong Mahjong, etc.
About Shanghai Mahjong, the winner should collect 14 tiles which are listed as two same tiles (we call it mahjong head), plus four groups with 3 tiles which could be continuous number with same variety tiles or with the 3 same tiles.
Equally divide all tiles as four groups and compose it as a square. Roll 2 dices, pick 4 tiles one by one, start from the person who roll the dices. Then repeat. After 3 rounds, everyone should have 12 tiles on hand. The last round, the first person could pick two tiles, the rest could pick only one tile.
Finally, the first person has 14 tiles, others have 13tiles. Then the game will be formally started.
