Sometimes we get lazy and pronounce some words with a ‘T’ in the middle as a ‘D’. Both ways are ok.

Ivanka Trump has found an unlikely critic, as well as ally, in the latest controversy surrounding her role as as advisor in her fatherā€™s White House.

A diplomatic scandal erupted over the first daughter sitting in for her father during a meeting of world leaders at the G20 summit in Hamburg.

This apparent breach of protocol quickly sparked outrage among Donald Trumpā€™s critics, who said it was another blurring of the lines between family and official business that has dogged his presidency.

They pointed out that Ivanka is unelected andĀ lacks foreign policy credentials to sit in on such a senior diplomatic meeting. Others lampooned the fashion brand owner who recently said in an interview that she tries to ā€œstay out of politics.ā€

ā€œThis is strange,ā€ tweeted Michael McFaul, the United States ambassador to Russia under President Barack Obama who is a professor of political science at Stanford University.Ā ā€œVery strange.ā€

Not surprisingly, theĀ president launched a passionate defense of his daughter, an official but unpaid assistant to her father. He tweeted that he just stepped out to attend other meetings and that having someone take his place at such a meeting is ā€œvery standardā€ practice.

Yes, itā€™s true that German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the ā€œcool-headedā€ host of the summit, brushed off Ivankaā€™s presence at the meeting in a news conference Sunday. She said that itā€™s up to each country to decide who steps in when its leader has toĀ leave for another meeting.

ā€œIvanka Trump was part and parcel of the American delegation, so that is something that other delegations also do,ā€ Merkel said. Itā€™s very well known that she works at the White House and is also engaged in certain initiatives.ā€

So, the president scored with his Merkel argument. But, as his typical with Trump, he let his tweeting impulses get the better of him. He decided to throw in some swipes at his former Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, as well as the mainstream media.

Ivanka Trump and Chelsea Clinton.Ā
But in doing so, Trump dragged Ivankaā€™s one-time good friend, former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, into the controversy:

ā€œIf Chelsea Clinton were asked to hold the seat for her mother,as her mother gave our country away, the Fake News would say CHELSEA FOR PRES!ā€

Chelsea, who has been using her social media presence to become an outspoken critic of Trump administration policies, didnā€™t stay silent for long. She took to Twitter to point out the likelihood that had her mother been elected president, she would have never considered bringing her into her administration, much less have her sit in for her at a G20 meeting.

But in the process, Chelsea couldnā€™t help but throw some shade back at Ivanka and the idea that any presidentā€™s child would be in the position to participate in a high-level diplomatic meeting just by virtue of a personal relationship.
