The past tense expresses a specific thing that happened just once (or a few times)

• This chocolate cake is really good. How did you do it?
  = HOW DID YOU MAKE THIS SPECIAL CAKE

• To make a chocolate cake, you need chocolate, eggs, milk, butter. You put them together. Then you put them in the oven and then you are finished. = 现在时 = 正常的过程，所有巧克力蛋糕
