to bail out on someone = stop supporting someone, to abandon them

He said he would always be by my side, but as soon as the boss started complaining, he bailed out on me and let me handle the problem by myself.

a safety net = a plan B

The company I wanted to join bailed out on me at the last moment. Luckily, I hadn’t resigned from my job, so I still had a good safety net.

a stake = something that you risk losing

Hurry up, a man’s life is at stake ! If we don’t react quickly, he’s gonna die.

The stakes aren’t very high, you can afford to lose this job.
