unless = if not

I will be on time unless there is a traffic jam.

We will have a nice picnic if the weather is nice. =
We will have a nice picnic unless the weather is bad.
We will have a nice picnic unless the weather isn’t nice.

I don’t care what job my daughter has as long as she’s happy.


1. Unless you have a good reason, you must come.
2. You can stay as long as you like.
3. She can go out as long as she promises to be back at midnight.
4. If it rains, you’ll stay at home.
5. He can watch TV as long as he stays quiet.
6. I won’t come unless you ask me to.
7. She won’t succeed unless she practises regularly.
8. He’ll eat out unless he has too much to do.

Vocabulary

a desire = something or someone that you want real
I desire to travel around the world.

a wish = something you want to happen (but is often unreal)
I wish you were here.
My strongest wish is to be an actor.
We wish you a Merry Christmas.
I wish you all the best. I wish you to find the perfect person.

to be supposed to do
He told me I was supposed to be there at 10.
Oops, you weren’t supposed to hear that.
I am supposed to leave China next month.
The next student was supposed to be here by now. I suppose he’s late again.

In formal English, ‘supposed, expected’ sometimes disappears.
The President is to arrive at 8 pm.

slap / slapped / slapped = to hit someone with the flat part of your hand, usually on the face
punch / -ed /-ed = to hit someone with a closed fist
beat / beat / beaten = to slap or punch someone several times, repeatedly
Usually, women slap, men punch and thugs beat each other.
