early / late = in general, everyday, near the beginning or the end of a period of time
He usually wakes up early so I think he will arrive soon.

The metro closes early. = In Shanghai, the metro closes at 11 pm, whereas it closes at 2 am in most cities.
The metro closes soon. = It is 10.45 pm. I should hurry up to catch the last metro.
