F2F Class Notes (Ben)

Vocabulary

your other half = your wife or husband
It’s difficult to find your other half.

a rite, a ritual = the old and traditional way to do something (often religious)
In China, New Year rites involve going to the temple and praying. And there are also many rites during a burial, such as singing and throwing flowers.
Saying “I’m sorry for your loss” is a ritual expression at someone’s funeral.

Writing exercise

Impolite behavior/act
This Friday I had planned to meet my friend to have dinner together. My friend is a middle-aged artist that has his own studio on Moganshan Road. On Friday morning my coworker also asked me if I was willing to go to the music bar at 8pm. She would bring her friend.
“Sure. May I** also bring my friend.” I responded.
“OK, see you at the bar.”
At 4:45pm I reached my friend’s spot. We had a short chat.
“My friend invited me to the bar. Are you interested?” I asked.
“OK, I will go with you.”
After dinner we arrived there earlier than them at 8pm. The thing was we had to wait for the table. There were so many people waiting for tables before us. We sat down not only waiting for a table but for my coworker and her friend too. After 25 minutes, she arrived with her friend. I told her that we needed to wait for a long time.

I also suggested going to another bar.

1. They agreed with me, so we left and went to another bar.
2. They agreed with me, so we left and did so.

However, her friend suddenly said that she wanted to go home instead of going to the bar. I was so shocked after she (had) said that. Her reason was pretty ridiculous and fake: she just wanted to go to the first bar.

Actually I knew she didn’t want to go with my friend based on her facial expression. Also my coworker showed the same expression/reaction as her, but not as strong as hers. Finally we went home.

I felt so sorry for my friend, for I had brought him along but in the end it had been in vain.
“Never mind/Think nothing of it. We can meet again later.” my friend said.

While I was on the subway my coworker sent messages saying she was sorry for the way she acted. I didn’t want to reply to her.
In social situations we should be polite and respectful to others.

She had invited me first. I also said I might bring my friend. I don’t know what her reaction to my friend was about.

Her friend was very rude to everyone, including me. They had chosen the spot themselves.

We got there before them and waited for 25 minutes, but they left at once, with a very lousy excuse. It was totally unacceptable.

Sometimes my coworker says that she wants to hang out with my friends and I. I would have  liked to invite her if I got a chance.

However, after this happening I don’t think I will invite her anymore until she knows how to be respectful to friends.
