Vocabulary
doze off, nod off = fall asleep unintentionally
The class was very boring. Many students dozed off
a hunch = an intuitive feeling
I had the hunch that it would rain the next day, and it turned out that I was right.
to jam = to be stuck in one position (machine)
Some paper is jammed in the copy machine. Now the machine is jammed.
scrupulous = careful and honest, trying to do the right thing
Most thieves and bandits are unscrupulous people.
gripe = complain
a morgue = a place where dead bodies are kept before being buried or cremated
a stretcher = 担架
A stretcher has four handles: one at each corner.
bother to do = take the time to do (usually used in the negative)
I didn’t (bother to) answer him.
get someone going = make someone excited
I hate everything about Apple: their brand, their products… and don’t get me going on their business practices.
decline = go down, start failing
My memory is declining. I start forgetting things.
out = eliminated, out of the question
So where shall we go? It will be raining, so outdoor activities are out. We need to find something indoors.
a concussion = a loss of consciousness due to a blow to the head
After my brain concussion, I couldn’t speak for 5 minutes.
