How I learned to speak German

My first foreign language – German brought to me my grandfather who spoke German brilliant as a native speaker and I really liked it. He always said to me the best way how to learn some language is to go abroad. When I was at university I spent my last year in Germany as an Erasmus student. At the beginning German students didn’t want to talk to me so much when they recognized I am not able to communicate very well in their language, which was for me a little bit hard but also a good motivation for being better. So first I started communicate with the other Erasmus students which was also not so good for being better in German (each of us made a lot of mistakes and nobody corrected us if we were wrong) but at least I was not more afraid of speaking. After 2 months I realized I am on a right way when I could communicate about daily routines and also I could study my objects at the German university. Luckily I was only one Czech student there, so I had not any possibilities to use my native language which was really helpful for improving of my language skills.

How I learned to speak German

My first foreign language – German was brought to me my grandfather who spoke German brilliantly as a native speaker and I really liked it. He always said to me the best way how to learn a language is to go abroad. When I was at university, I spent my last year in Germany as an Erasmus student.

At the beginning, German students didn’t want to talk to me so much when they saw I was not able to communicate very well in their language, which was a little bit hard for me but also a good motivation to get better.

So first, I started to communicate with the other Erasmus students, which was also not so good for getting better at German (each of us made a lot of mistakes and nobody corrected us if we were wrong) but at least I was not afraid of speaking anymore. After 2 months, I realized I was on the right way when I could communicate about daily things and also I could study my subjects at the German university. Luckily I was the only one Czech student there, so I had no possibility to use my native language, which was really helpful to improve my language skills.

Thalia’s text

I have had a question in my mind for many years and that is : how can I speed up my learning ? When I was a student in university I thought if I could speed up my learning I could spend less time at school. I meant that I could have extra time to do some other things. And if I learned really fast, I probably wouldn’t have to go to school at all.

However, this way of reaping rewards without working is unrealistic. Unless I have Doraemon’s pocket.
