Who (=whom) did you have breakfast with this morning?

If you can say “him” then you can say “whom”

with him –> whom with?


attend = be at an event

I didn’t go to the meeting. = I didn’t attend the meeting.

The meeting was pretty big, there were at least 15 attendants.


emphasize = to make one aspect important

If you want to make the customer happy, you should emphasize that you are trying hard to help him.


I run. –> in general, every day, often

I am running. –> right now.

I ran. –> finished, short. This morning, I ran. In Thailand, I ran everyday.

I was running –> long

They are often used together to speak about surprises, accidents or interruptions

I was running when I fell.

I was in a meeting when my phone rang.

When you called me, I was watching a movie.

While I was cooking, a bird flew in. = I was cooking when a bird flew in. = A bird flew in while I was cooking.


eat / ate / eaten

  1. I eat = everyday, in general. I don’t eat spicy food
  2. I ate = time is clear = this morning. yesterday, when I was in Thailand, 2 years ago.
  3. I have eaten = time is unclear = already, before, never, so far, until now

I have eaten breakfast this morning –> ate

I lived in Czech Republic for 20 years and I have lived here for 2 months.

When you want to stress that something is long, have done –> have been doing

often used with “wait, try” or in difficult situations

I have waited for 30 minutes = I have been waiting for 30 minutes and the food hasn’t come yet !

Where were you? I have been calling you all day long !

I’m tired of Shanghai. I’ve been living here for 3 years already !

I’ve been learning English for 1 year now and I still love it.
