exaggerate 夸张

Some salespeople exaggerate numbers when they speak to customers.

It’s ok to exaggerate a little bit on your resume, but you shouldn’t lie.

e.g. My friend was exaggerating about how much she got paid. She told us she got 3000 rmb a month, but she actually only got 1000.


a tension 紧张局势

There is a lot of tension between North and South Korea.

There have been some tensions between my wife and I lately.


torture = 酷刑 causing severe pain on someone to punish them or have them speak

The enemy tortured many soldiers they caught.


dictate = to rule and choose everything by yourself

He always dictates what to do and we have to listen to him, even if we don’t agree. He is a real dictator. 独裁者

a dictate = an order

He issued many of the group’s dictates = He decided what the group should do (issue 发出)


a coalition = (co = together, ally = friend) a group of allies or countries who fight together against a common enemy

During the Second World War, France, England and Russia made a coalition against Germany.

There is an US-led coalition against the Islamic State = a coalition that the US leads
