In Foreign Countries: **check if they tip first** IF you want good service at the bar, throw some money into the tip jar before you order, or try and get them to see you put money in.  So next time you get a drink they give you good service.

North America – you don’t call for the waiter.

Never ever ever – snap, or yell for the waiter/waitress.

Bottomless/ Free Refills – some drinks, will say on menu.

Getting the Bill

  • put your cutlery onto your plate
  • Put your napkin onto your plate

Eg.  Can I get the bill?/ Can I get the check?

Is this all together?/ Is it all on one bill?

  • No, can you separate it
  • I’ll pay for the appetizer and ……

Can you pack this up?/  Can I get this to go?/  Can you put this in a doggy bag for me? (native English)

Eg.  What is your special?

Host/Hostess:  a job at a restaurant, the person who greets you, seats you, and gives you the menu.

General Rule:  If you invite someone, usually you pay.

Eg.  Can I take you for lunch?/ Can I buy you dinner?/ Can I treat you to dinner

Friends:  usually everyone pays for themselves. 

Eg.  Let’s go eat dinner.

Going Dutch/ treating someone

Eg.  Are we going dutch?/  How are we working the bill?/ How shall we split the bill?

“a round of drinks” = one drinks per person.

Eg.  I will get the next round = I’m buying the next pitcher/beers/ drinks.

Eg.  I’ll get this round, you get the next one.

Eg.  Let’s stay for one more round!

Eg.  I’m gonna buy that table over there a round of drinks.
