Review:

take a number – if there are a lot of people waiting for something, people can take a number

ex: Wow! The line is so long, let’s take a number and wait for our number to be called.

 

private practice/office – dentists/doctors can have their own office, the people who go here are regular patients

ex: Celeste’s mom is a dentist. She has her own private practice.

pay out of pocket – paying for something with your own money

ex: When we go to the hospital, sometimes we need to pay the fees out of pocket then the insurance will reimburse us.

reimburse (verb) / reimbursement (noun)  – pay back

ex: My friend helps me to buy trousers, so I should reimburseher.

ex: Celeste reimbursed Judy for the Taobao shopping.

ex: The insurance company needs to do a reimbursement, so Angela can get her money back.

ex: Can you fill out the reimbursement claim/document/file?

birth marks – marks on the skin  since birth

ex: I have a small birth mark on my arm.

Utensils (you – ten – suls):  items you use to cook with, or eat with.  – spoon/ chopsticks/ knives.

Ingredients (in – gree – dee – ents)

Living Room/ Sitting Room:

Fireplace:  a place inside the house to burn wood for warmth.

Ex:  In China we don’t have fireplaces, in foreign countries they sometimes have.

Couch:  another word for sofa

Ex:  There’s always a couch in the living room.

Coffee table:  the low table in the middle of the living room.

Ex:  The coffee table is in the middle of the living room and in front of the couch.

Ex:  I like to eat my dinner on the coffee table in front of the tv.

Rug:  a smaller portion of carpet that is laid down on tiled/wood floor.

Ex:  Rugs are soft, and beautiful.

Photo frame:  a holder for pictures to display them nicely.

Ex:  I have a lot of photo frames to hold family photos.

Curtains (kur  tans):  long pieces of fabric that cover the windows.

Ex:  My mother bought large curtains for my new room.

Arm chair:  a big soft chair (couch/sofa) for one person.

Ex:  I always read books and have a drink in the arm chair.

China cabinet:  a display case for your nice dishes.

Ex:  There’s a lot of things in the china cabinet.

Cabinet:  a separate moveable closet/storage space.

Ex:  My son stores his toys in the cabinet in his room.

Fine china:  your nice dishes/ teacups/ things that you don’t use everyday to eat on.

Ex:  I have a lot of fine china, sometimes I will clean it.

Ex:  My son is not allowed near the fine china.

Patio (pat – e – o):  an area of a house that is outside for eating/bbqing/ sitting.

Ex:  We don’t have a patio in our house.

Deck:  an outdoor sitting/cooking/hanging laundry area in an apartment or house above the first floor.

Ex:  There’s a in most peoples houses.

Storytelling:

I like my living room, after dinner we always take a break for half an hour.  Sometimes my husband watching TV in the sofa.  Sometimes he do the laundry in the bathroom.  My son and I always read books on the rug in the living room.  There a lot of fruits on the coffee table.  There are a lot of photos in photo frames on the shelves.  I told my son that every photo has it’s own story.  There are also a lot of books on the shelves, some books of his and some books of mine.    After finished reading, we should put them back on the shelves.  In the evening when my son falls asleep I like to play games in the arm chair, and I will turn on the lamp.
