Vocabulary

Pyrotechnics – things that require fire to start up

e.g. Fireworks are one of the most popular pyrotechnics among Chinese people.

Fireworks (n) – a type of pyrotechnics that forms colorful shapes on the night sky

e.g. Fireworks are widely used during Chinese New Years Celebration

Firecrackers (n)  – a type of pyrotechnics that create a horribly loud sound, similar to “THUD” when lit

e.g. Chinese children like using fireworks to scare people.

饺子 – fried dumplings

水饺 –  boiled dumplings served with soup

小笼包 – steamed dumplings 

小馄饨 – a different type of boiled dumplings, where the dough is made by mixing flour and water and is thinner than in boiled or fried dumplings

汤圆 – sweet dumplings made out of glutinous rice, typically served in sweet soup and eaten for Chinese New Years Celebration

馒头 – dumplings made with fluffy bread dough and filled with either meat or vegetables and tofu 

团子 – stickier form of mantou

 年年有余 – that you wish someone that they have money and luck in every year to come

福到了- fortune has arrived

倒 – something is hanging upside down

红烧 – braised in soy sauce

珍珠奶茶 – bubble tea

生煎- steamed and then fried dumplings ( Yang’s Dumplings)
