I made a lot of friends of whom some are at my age and some are at my grandparents’ age. – I made a lot of friends, some of whom where at my age, and others that were at my grandparents’ age

when he was only 76 and since then I became to be care about the population in that village. – and from that time, I started to care / and since then I have cared

After graduation I came to Shanghai and I go home twice a year = After graduation, I came to Shanghai and since then, I have been home twice a year. 

there is a mere 10 families left in the village / there was merely 10 familiies in the village

he is the only boy of them – he is the only one of them who is a man / is the only man, out of all of them. 

acidic – acid feeling / taste
eg. it makes my stomach very acidic

respectable – to act / dress / talk in a way that shows respect / could be respected
respected – sth/sb that has respect shown to it / them
eg. the eyes were always given to the most respected member of the village
