Vocabulary

ought to – often more positive than “should”
eg. you ought to get a promotion

connotation – subtle feeling of a word / phrase

item – individual things on a list

there are many items on my shopping list

itemised list – a list that is separated into individual parts

contradict / contradiction 

odd < > even 

to be at odds with sth – to not agree with sth / to be contradictory

line up with / to be in line with sth 

I like tea and coffee
I don’t like tea or coffee
I don’t like tea or want coffee
I don’t like tea, and, I don’t want coffee.

to do sth out of spite (for sb) – to do something with negative motivations for sb
despite / in spite of – jing guan
eg. despite the rain, we still held our wedding

sort out = fix / organise
eg. i need to sort out my work situation because I’m not happy at the moment
