Vocabulary

Dialect – a special variety of language, within one common language

eg: “American dialect differences are not so strong.”

Slang – very informal language, changing the meaning of an original word to a new or idiom meaning.

eg: “Cool, means interesting. Cool is a slang word for interesting or relaxed person.”

hot headed – a person who gets angry easily

eg: “He’s too hot headed to be in charge.”

ubiquitous – extremely common, being everywhere

eg: “Cool is the most ubiquitous slang word in America.” “Ovens are ubiquitous in America, but not in China.”

folks – informal word for people, common people

eg: “A lot of folks in America like to cook for the holidays.”

Pronunciation

folks – fohkes

progress V. – pruh gress      Eg: “He progressed very quickly because there was a lot of pressure.”

progress N. – prAH – gress  Eg: “I’m afraid we’re not making much progress.”
