to portray something – to show something in a certain way

e.g. Newspapers play an important role in how something is portrayed by people.

growing pains – pain or problems that arise when something or someone grows too fast or very sudden

e.g. A lot of countries that suddenly grew very fast economically, experience growing pains (due to this growth).

to solve – 解决

despot – æš´å›ï¼Œ an oppressive ruler

to make a good point – say something that makes sense (mostly to convince someone)

e.g. Tanya should wear her glasses but she doesn’t want to. Her mom says she has to because otherwise Tanya can’t see anything. Tanya’s mom makes a good point.

to oppress – to hold down people, to make them feel bad

e.g. The king oppressed the people by taking away all their food.
