Continuous Tenses describe actions at a moment in time when they have started happening but are not yet finished.

  • The Present Continuous Tense is used to describe an action which is in progress at the time of speaking. For example, when a person says, “I am writing a letterâ€, it means that he is in the process of writing a letter right now.
  • The Past Continuous Tense describes actions or events in a time before now, which began in the past and was still going on at the time we are talking about. In other words, it expresses an unfinished or incomplete action in the past. For example, when I say “When Catia arrived at the restaurant, I was talking to a friend on the phone”, it means that at the moment of the action described (when Catia arrived), I had already started talking on the phone, but hadn’t finished the call yet.
  • The Future Continuous tense is used to refer to an unfinished action or event that will be in progress at a certain time later than now, being used in order to project ourselves into the future. For example, if I say “I can’t go to the party on Friday, because I will be having dinner with my boss.”, I mean that at the moment of the referred action (the party), I will be in the process of doing another action (having dinner with my boss).
