F2F Class notes 24th June (Eddie)

Q: Is it true?
A: Of course not. I made it up.

to make something up = to invent something which is not true

Because
As
Since

E.g.    He did not come to the meeting because he overslept.

As this was a new city for him, he took a long walk that morning.

Since the elevator was not working, she had no option but to take the stairs.

While / Whereas

E.g. My cousin thinks I should buy a new car, whereas my parents are totally against it.
Australia is a huge country, while Britain is a tiny island off Europe.

This fight was going to be interesting. John was a tall, strong man, while Jimmy was very short and thin.

Haley’s example:

Sharks and dolphins may look the same, but are very different. Sharks are fish, while dolphins are mammals.

I remembered that I have seen a travel note about Macau. The tourist wrote that if you want to feel the culture difference between western and eastern and you don’t want to go far, Macau is the best of the choice. Macau merges west characters, you can see the Portuguese horses, and retain east spring. Everyone knows that there are lots of casinos in Macau, and you can go gambling freely. In Macau, you also can go shopping at department stores, biking around the island, see pandas in the zoo, and taste the tasty food. Although the size of Macau is small, you need four or five days to experience the full of Macau.

the odds = the chances of something happening

E.g. What are the odds that we will bump into someone we know tomorrow?

to bump into someone = to meet by accident
