F2F Class Notes 24th February (Tony)

Vocabulary

off the top of my head – you can’t recall something immediately

eg: “I was really busy last week, but off the top of my head I couldn’t tell you exactly what I was busy with.” “Off the top of my head I can’t tell you how many people are in my extended family.”

keep tabs on (sth.) – stay updated about something, what is happening or what they are doing.

“They keep tabs on us by checking all of our “valuable hours” on a system that we upload them to.”

Murphy’s Law – anything that can go wrong, will go wrong

eg: “If I move to that line, surely the line I’m in now will start moving faster, according to Murphy’s Law.”

referral – a source of information given by another person

eg: “We got a referral for a useful logistics company to expedite our shipping.”

hands on adj. – used to describe someone who does the actual work themselves

eg: “We are a hands on consulting firm, we assist the client to execute the solution.”

Grammar

A Sentence with a missing OBJECT can be confusing:

eg: “We proposed to the client.”      What did you propose?      “We proposed the solution to the client.”

WE – is the subject (noun)

PROPOSED – is the predicate (verb)

SOLUTION – is the object

CLIENT – is the indirect object, it is not directly affected by the verb

this mistake is also a little funny, because the most common meaning of Proposed without an Object, means to propose to someone you want to marry, to ask them to marry you.

eg: “He proposed to me last night.”

Homework

Write a story including all the vocabulary in this lesson. You can not write more than ten sentences.”
