Vocabulary

Disqualify (v): 1- to stop someone from being in a competition or doing something because they are unsuitable or they have done something wrong:
E.g.: Two top athletes have been disqualified from the championship after positive drug tests.

Cheat (v): 1- to behave in a dishonest way in order to get what you want.
E.g.: She cheated in the test by copying from the boy in front.

Cheat on (v): 1- If you cheat on your husband, wife, or usual sexual partner, you secretly have a sexual relationship with someone else:
E.g.: She found out that he’d been cheating on her.

Republic (n): 1- a country without a king or queen, usually governed by elected representatives of the people and a president:
E.g.: China was established as a republic after the 1911 Revolution.

To give rise to (v): 1- to cause something
E.g.: International support has given rise to a new sense of hope in the company.

Intention (v): 1- something that you want and plan to do.
E.g.: The Sales Department’s intention is to have a 2.5% growth in the next quarter.
E.g.: Our team is working hard with the intention of achieving a 2.5% growth in our profits.

Optimism (n): 1- the quality of being full of hope and emphasizing the good parts of a situation, or a belief that something good will happen. (Adj: Optimistic)
E.g.: There was a note of optimism in his voice as he spoke about the company’s future.

Pessimism (n): 1- emphasizing or thinking of the bad part of a situation rather than the good part, or the feeling that bad things are more likely to happen than good things. (Adj: Pessimistic)
E.g.: There is now a mood of pessimism about the economy.

Organic (adj): 1- being or coming from living plants and animals. 2- not using artificial chemicals in the growing of plants and animals for food and other products.
E.g.: A quarter of an average family’s garbage is organic matter.
E.g.: Cheap organic food is still difficult to come by.

Landfill (n): 1- the process of getting rid of large amounts of rubbish by burying it, or a place where rubbish is buried:
E.g.: 90 percent of American rubbish is dumped in landfill sites.

Emission (n): 1- he act of sending out gas, heat, light, etc.. 2- 排放
E.g.: Environmental groups want a reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases (温室气体).

Methane (n): 1- 甲烷
