Vocabulary

Chili – noun, a kind of pepper, or a thick soup usually made with beans and meat in the USA.

Ex. My best friend, who is from Alabama, has a secret family Chili recipe that is to die for*.

*Note: the idiom (成语) “to die for” is usually used describe a kind of food that is extremely delicious. Another popular food-related idiom is the phrase “as American as apple pie.” For example, one might say “Donald Trump is as American as apple pie.”

Epitome – noun, a typical or ideal example of something

Ex. Donald Trump is the epitome of ignorance.

Patriotism – noun, love for one’s country

Ex. Although there is nothing wrong with being patriotic, it becomes a problem when people are aggressive toward foreigners.

Phobia – noun, a fear of something

Ex. Ever since I was a child, I’ve had a phobia of the dark.

Xenophobia – noun, fear of something or someone different from you

Ex. Modern-day America is marked by xenophobia.

Arachnophobia – noun, a fear of spiders

Ex. Most people suffer from arachnophobia.

Tarantula – noun, a large, hairy spider

Ex. Usually, when people have spiders as pets, they are tarantulas.

You can fire the skin – you can fry the skin

Year-round – adjective, present in all four seasons

Ex. Snake soup is a year-round delicacy in China.

Skewer – a long stick used to grill meat or vegetables

Ex. Skewers are usually made of metal or wood in the West.

Grammar

If I go to a country I never know it, there may be fear for someone or something – If I go to a country I’ve never been to, I may be scared
