Vocabulary

To go out with friends – to go to a bar, restaurant or club with friends. (e.g. Yesterday I went out with friends, we went to a bar and had a long chat.)

Sense of direction – how well you can recognise your surroundings and get from A to B. (e.g. I have such a terrible sense of direction that if you blindfold me outside of my house and spin me around 5 times I will not be able to find my way home.)

Blindfold – something that is put over your eyes so that you cannot see. (e.g. I was blindfolded before I got into the car so I could not see where the headquarters was.)

(To) spin – to turn around and around. (e.g. My niece loves it when I spin her as fast as possible.)

I finished reading “A Little Princess” chapters 1 to 6.
This book is about a little girl named Sara.
Sara’s father, Captain Crewe, was a rich man and he loved her very much.
However, Captain Crewe was very busy and because Sara’s mother died when she was born, he couldn’t take care of her by himself.
So, he had to send her to a boarding school in England and come back to India to continue his work.

Sara was a very clever girl, she was good at telling stories and dancing, so she quickly made some friends in the boarding school.
At school, she had a maid named Becky because Captain Crewe wanted Sara to have a comfortable school life.
Becky was several years older than Sara but the school girls didn’t respect her because she was just a maid.
On the other hand, Sara was different, she gave Becky food and told her stories.
She treated Becky as a friend.

Some of the other school girls didn’t like Sara, especially Lavinia and Jessie because they were jealous of her.
The headmistress, Miss Minchin, didn’t like Sara either.
However, Miss Minchin had to pretend she liked Sara because Sara’s father was very rich.
Sara’s father gave the school a lot of money to take care of his little girl.

In Chapter 7, Sara’s father was dead because of the tropical fever.
His friend took all of his money and went away.
So, Sara became a poor girl and she didn’t have any relatives in the world.
Sara’s life style would changed a lot, I’m looking forward what will happen next.
