Vocabulary 词汇


Fidelity – honesty, usually used when talking about marriage

Ex. Infidelity is one of the most common reasons for divorce.

Ex. The traditional Mercator projection map is criticized for infidelity of size.

Eurocentric – centred around European history and ideals

Ex. Many history textbooks from the 1900s are no longer used because they are Eurocentric.

Civilisation – a society with established infrastructure (文明)

Ex. The two longest continuing civilisations are located in Jericho, Palestine and Damascus, Syria.

Humid – wet, used to describe the condition of the air

Ex. In humid climates it is more difficult to see stars.

Grammar 语法


The future tense “will” is generally used when talking about things in the far future; when something is planned to take place soon, we often use “going to” instead. This is not a set rule in the English language, but native speakers tend to phrase things this way.

Ex. I’ll get married one day.

Ex. I’m going to get married next month.

Expressions 成语


A “risk-taker” is a person who is not afraid of risks or danger.

Ex. I was offered to move abroad with my company, but I’m not really a risk-taker so I decided to stay in China.

The expression “take my word for it” means “trust me.”

Ex. Take my word for it, he’s cheating on you.
