Vocabulary

Slave  (n): 1- someone who is legally owned by another person and is forced to work for that person without pay
E.g.: He treats her like a slave.

Slavery (n): 1- a condition of having to work very hard without proper payment or appreciation.
E.g.: Slavery was abolished in the US in 1865.

Colonization (n): 1- a process of control by which a central system of power dominates the surrounding land and its components (people, animals etc.). The term comes from the Latin word colere, which means “to inhabit”.
E.g.: 
The colonization of Brazil by the Portuguese lasted 322 years.

Colony (n): 1- an area that is controlled by or belongs to a country and is usually far away from it
E.g.: The United States was a British colony for hundreds of years.

Hierarchy (n): 1- a system in which members of an organization or society are ranked according to relative status or authority. 2- a vertical power system.
E.g.: The initiative was with those lower down in the hierarchy.


Idioms:

A big deal (n) VS. To make a big deal out of something (v): 1- When you say that something “is a big deal“, it means that it’s important. But when you “make a big deal out of ___”, it means that something is not that important but you’re acting like it is.
E.g.: This project is a big deal, so please do it carefully.
E.g.: You should really stop making a big deal out of this… It’s not that important!
