Grammar

“Supposed to” vs “must”

[Subject] + “to be” + supposed to + [verb phrase]

Ex. You are supposed to go to school.
[Subject] + must + [verb phrase]

Ex. You must go to school.

The difference is that sentences with the word “must” sound like commands. Sentences with the words “supposed to” sound like the person did not follow the command. For example, in the morning, I tell you “It’s 8:00, you must go to school.” When you come home at 9:00 and tell me that instead of going to school, you went to the park, I can say “you were supposed to go to school.” We can say that must = need to, and supposed to = should have.

Phrases

“I have butterflies in my stomach” refers to being nervous, usually about something good. Normally it describes an excited, nervous feeling having to do with love.
