Vocabulary
humid – when the weather is very wet
e.g. The summer in Shanghai are very humid and very hot.
fictional – adjective of fiction
scam – 骗子
Conmen – people who trick or scam other people in order to get their money
e.g. There’s a lot of conmen in the world, so you have to watch out and be careful.
fake – not real, not authentic 假的
e.g. I bought a fake Chanel handbag on Taobao!
identity – who you are
identity card – an official card that states who you are 身份证
e.g. It’s very important to not lose your identity card.
to pretend – 假装 to fake being doing or being something
e.g. Candice likes to pretend she’s a princess, she says.
to write to someone – to send someone a message through written language
for example, sending someone a message on wechat or sending them a letter
e.g. I just wrote to Candice on wechat!
e.g. I just wrote Candice. I sent her a letter
reason – 原因
e.g. It would take a very good reason for me to give money to a stranger.
to empathise (动词) – 同情别人
e.g. Women empathise more with other people than men.
average – 平均
e.g. So the average of 3 and 5 is 4. The average amount of money that women who get scammed online lose is $12,500.
lonely – 孤单
e.g. Old people are often lonely.
damage – 破坏
e.g. He gave her a lot of emotional damage (伤害别人的感情).
emotional – 跟感情有关系的
e.g. I’m very sad, I’m not feeling very well emotionally.
Reading
A new Internet scam is tricking people who are looking for love. Conmen buy “scam packs” online for a few dollars. They include love letters, photos, videos and fake identities. The conmen pretend to be looking for love on dating sites. They write to people. They then ask for money. They give many reasons why they need money.
