F2F Class Notes 17th September (Jesse)

i use it to think “until and before can replace each other”

I can live until I die = I can continue living and then when I die I stop living

I can’t arrive until 6pm = I can’t arrive and i won’t arrive … but then at 6 i will arrive.

I was happy until you arrived. = i was happy and then i stopped being happy when you arrived.

this / that / next / last = no at / on / in

today / yesterday / tomorrow = no at / on / in

we feel happy

the party was pretty standard / was just a normal party / was just a party

it was nothing special = down play sth / make something seem not important or better than average

using “doing” words to create more time based movement and continuation feeling

i very much value our time together
i value very much our time together

it reminds me that celeste told me – that reminds me that celeste told me

For most of the past year,Roger was in Auckland and his girlfriend Georgia was in Shanghai, so they valued very much the time they were together and they spent a few hours everyday being together.

For most of the past year, Roger has been living in Aukland while his girlfriend Georgia has been in Shanghai. As a result, they really valued the time that they got and spent a few hours every day together.

i have been doing sth = before + period + continue
i had been doing sth = before + continue + changed
i was doing sth = before + period

swamped = to have too much work and can’t finish in time

I’m stuck working / I’m swamped / I’m stuck at work / I have to stay back at work / I’ve got too much on at work

I can’t make it tonight / I don’t have time to come tonight / I’m too busy to come

he shook his hand and said a quick hello before going into Georgias room…

dodgy – tricky + untrustworthy
eg. the flower shop was super dodgy, selling to foreigners at a higher price

she / he can always be replaced by a name
it was carol wasn’t it?
no it was John.

there are question marks over whether he’s a good manager or not.

she was taken back and had a lot of questions running through her head

to your right / on your right side / on your right

he is left handed < > right handed

i reached the island = arrived
i reached out my hand = stretched my arm
i reached for the cup = tried to get the cup

when he went to shake my hand, he held out his left hand subconsciously at first….

it / they = general thing / obvious
this / these = immediate / nearby / now
that / those = the other / further / past

lo and behold / wouldn’t you know it / would you believe – very unexpected
in fact – quite unexpected
actually – not 100% expected
