Vocabulary
polyglot – someone who speaks five or more languages (or generally, who speaks a lot of languages)
e.g. My friend is a complete polyglot, she speaks 7 languages.
Sec. – short for security, related to defense, the military
Dec. – short for democrats
Pentagon – refers to the defense department of the US
Rep. – Representative or republicans
pool – swimming pool
one too many – there’s a lot of something, but then you add an extra one and it’s TOO much
e.g. There’s space for 20 people in this room, but 21 would be one too many.
-> the drop that makes the vase overflow
-> the straw that broke the camel’s back
to fly well with something – to go well with something, suitable
e.g. It won’t fly well with Pakistan -> Pakistan won’t be happy about it.
to wingman – to help a friend conquer a romantic love interest
e.g. My friend is wingmanning me tonight at the party.
to take it up a notch – to step it up, to level up, to take it to a higher level, make it more difficult/challenging
top notch – high level
e.g. This student is top notch, he always does his homework.
“She wants a notch in her belt” – she wants another achievement added to her record
a notch – a mark you make to keep record of something
to hoot – the sound the owl makes
It takes one to know one – to recognize someone who’s similar to you because you’re one of them
short-shrift – to give little attention or time
to no avail – there’s no result
avail – result or profit
media avail – to get successful publicity
to dot the I’s and cross the T’s – to pay attention to detail
