Vocabulary
vehicle – anything you move around in
eg: Planes, Cars, Trains and bikes are all vehicles.
pedal – a control you use with your feet
eg: There are usually two pedals in cars.
Grammar
-ing as a Noun:
I am dancing. (here it is clearly a VERB, because we used be)
I like dancing. (Could be verb or Noun)
Ing words as a Noun are a kind of activity, and therefore inherently similar to Verbs, which are action words.
That was some quick (adj.) eating (N). He ate the whole pizza in 2 minutes.
Ing Vs. Ed as an ADJ.
This class is boring, I can’t understand anything. (to Make you)
This class is bored. (is the class alive? it is not interested in what;s happening?) (makes no sense)
He is bored, because he can’t understand anything. (to be)
I’m interested in playing tennis. (I have the feeling)
Playing Tennis is interesting. (Tennis gives me that feeling)
ING as Object
an object is affected by the verb, or has the action of the verb
He ate the pizza. He=Subject ate=Verb pizza=object.
I like playing tennis.
Can you imagine living on the moon?
I like listening to tennis. (This man is very strange, because he only likes listening to it)
I like tennis. tennis=object
Eating those noodles made me sick.
Going to to the store was a waste of time.
Writing exercise
Original –
I admit making mistakes
I like drinking orange juice.
I hate doing exercise in the gym.
I started learning English before I got a new job.
Correction –
I admit making those mistakes hurt my chances at a promotion.
I admit that making those mistakes hurt my chances at a promotion.
