Vocabulary

tell the difference

look at the bright side – look at the positive aspects of the situation

eg: “Just look at the bright side, at least you didn’t get fired.”

slang – li yu, popular commonly used word, different from original meaning

chill, cool

eg: “Slang is always changing.”

expression – something that people often say, sometimes a shortened version of a phrase, usually thought of as true

eg: “I want to learn some more common expressions.”

idiom – a kind of expression, a short phrase with  different meaning than the original

eg: “Idioms often save time because they have a deeper meaning.”

pun – a play on words, where you intentionally use the wrong meaning of a similar word.

eg: “Puns are the lowest form of comedy.”

eg: “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it is two-tired.”

cold – insensitive

eg: “Oh my god, I don’t mean to be cold, but what happened to you, you look terrible.”
