preposition– (jie ci) about 150 prepositions in the English language

InĀ English grammar, aĀ prepositionĀ is a word (one of theĀ parts of speechĀ and a member of aĀ closed word class) that shows the relationship between aĀ nounĀ orĀ pronounĀ and other words in a sentence. See the lists ofĀ simple prepositionsĀ andĀ deverbalĀ prepositionsĀ below.

The combination of a preposition and aĀ noun phraseĀ is called aĀ prepositional phrase. A word group (such asĀ in front ofĀ orĀ on top of) that functions like a simple, one-word preposition is called aĀ complex preposition.

Prepositions commonly convey the following relationships: agency (by); comparison (like, as . . . as); direction (to, toward, through); place (at, by, on); possession (of); purpose (for); source (from, out of); and time (at, before, on).

Depending on how you “word” the sentence, the verb form will change.
