joking around / messing around = have fun / casually play (sometimes mean making out with a girl) 

mess up = make a mistake

the joke is on him. = actually the funny part of the situation affects him, not me. 

the first time i went to uk, i took the EZjet which is a cheap airline in europe. the plane took off / we took off, it was really crazy. i didn’t spend much time there.
