Kinds of parks –
Theme park – has a theme, usually based around a company (Disneyland, Universal Studios)
eg: “Universal Studios is a movie-based theme park. It’s supposed to be like you are on the set of a movie, or even in the movie.”
Amusement Park – similar to theme park, has Rides and shows.
eg: ” There’s a little amusement park in hongkou district.”
Waterpark – a place for swimming and going down big slides
eg: “That waterpark has a 20 story(floor) slide.”
Memorial Park – to remember some special people
eg: “There is a memorial park to honor soldiers.”
National Park – a park designated to be preserved in it’s natural state
eg: “Some features at national parks are truly stunning.”
Wildlife Refuge – like a zoo, but more natural, a safe space for animals to live freely
eg: “There are not any wildlife refuges in China.”
Things at a park:
Souvenir – a small thing to buy so you remember
Rides – Merry-Go-Round, Roller Coaster, Pirates of the Caribbean, Spinning rides
eg: “My heart starts pounding like it’s going to explode, when I ride roller coasters.”
field – a large of open area, usually grass
square,
pavilion – an outdoor stage used for performances,
gazebo – a small building in a garden or park that is open on all sides
ponds, lakes, streams
Things to do at a park
See a show
Have a picnic or barbecue.
Go for a stroll – leisurely walk
Go, Biking, Roller Skating, Ice Skating, Hiking, Camping, Rock Climbing, Kayaking (small one-person boat)
Vocabulary
terrifying – extremely scary
stunning – something powerful that interrupts your thought or actions
feature – an interesting part of the environment or building.
eg: “There are limestone dam features at Havasupia Falls in Arizona.”
