Vocabulary
Preparation – the noun for “prepare”
专业 – Professional vs. Specialist/Specialized – “professional” relates to some kind of business, some kind of job; “specialized” relates to having detailed knowledge of something specific, “specialist” is a person with detailed knowledge of something
e.g. I have professional experience as in-house legal counsel (I have experience with doing the job of in-house legal counsel)
-ist (sometimes -er, or -ian) – 者,家,员
e.g. Specialist, Pianist, Novelist, Artist, Capitalist (资本家)
e.g. Teacher, Lawyer, Trumpeter, Writer
e.g. Historian, Librarian
Improve – to get better at something, 提高
e.g. Laura is here to improve her English (she’s in the right place!)
Near – close, 附近
Dormitory (Dorm) – 宿舍
Along – on the sides of something long
Around – near something in a circle or square
College – the general word for studies after high school
University – always a four-year college
Preposition – 介词
Legislature – the people who write laws 立法机关
Executive – the people who control enforcing the law 行政
Judicial – judges and courts 司法
Regulation – the law on enforcing the legislature’s laws, how are we going to understand the law
e.g. The government just passed new environmental regulations according to the new law.
Pollution – 污染
