My name is Sunny Zhang. I am a recent graduate in Drama and Performing Arts. I am writing to apply for the role of Tour Manager that you advertised in the Tourist Daily.

The role of a tour manager is very interesting to me. Working in the travel industry is one of the most challenging but rewarding jobs you can do. I have followed the progress of Big Fun Holiday Tours since the company was founded in 2001 and I have seen how it has continued to grow as a leader in the travel sector. I particularly like how you work with families rather than big groups of adults.

During my BA in Drama and Performing Arts I worked as a Group Leader for Theatre Workshops for Kids. I enjoy to perform on stage. It is rewarding to help children to learn to do drama. I believe that this work experience allowed me to use the knowledge I learned in my degree. After finishing my job for Theatre Workshops, I tried to learn some new skills. I learned to play the ukulele and now I practise playing at least three times a week. Therefore, I believe that I am a good fit for this job, which requires creativity and dedication. I also love to travel and visit new places. While I was travelling, I developed my interpersonal skills. I had to interact with different people to find out information and get help when I needed it. In addition to this, I also speak English and Chinese fluently. I hope learning Spanish and have recently started attending an evening course.

I have decided looking for a job that will help me develop my skills and learn new ones as well. I believe that I am a suitable candidate for this job, because I love travelling and working with a lot of different people. I hope you will give me a chance to work with you.

I am available for interview Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm.

Starting in the 1850s, hundreds of thousands of Swiss children were taken from their parents and sent to farms to work. Now, thousands of people in Switzerland, who were forced into child labour, are demanding compensation for their stolen childhoods.

When children became orphans, when parents were unmarried, or when families were very poor, sometimes the children were taken from their families and placed in foster families. The children were often sent to farms, as agriculture in Switzerland was not mechanized, and so child labour was needed. They were called ‘contract children’.

“They wanted to take these children out of the poor family and put them somewhere else where they could learn how to work,” says historian Loretta Seglias. If the children’s parents objected, they could be sent to prison too.

The use of contract children declined in the 1960s and 70s.

Last year an official apology was made to contract children – and now, campaigner Guido Fluri is trying to get them compensation.

He hopes for about 500 million Swiss Francs (£327m) for the 10,000 contract children estimated to be alive today. However, there could still be many more years of discussion in the Swiss parliament before this becomes a reality.

But Fluri says it is important to remember these “people who suffered for decades.”

Prep is absolutely key. I’ve always said ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’. Make sure that you’re re-searching the company, by looking on their website and getting any information that you can, make sure that you research the job description and the person specification, and think about real-life examples of where you’ve done things in the past, and how you can apply those to the potential questions that might come up.

What advice would you give for people during the interview, especially if English is not their first language?

Yeah, so I think, first and foremost, the interview process is a nerve-wracking experience for absolutely everybody, whether English is your first language or not.

So, when you go into the interview you can always use your body language and non-verbal communication. Whether or not English is your first language, you can smile, you can give eye contact, you can nod when the – you know, when the interviewer is asking you the question.

Ok, so if someone asks a question that you don’t understand, always have the confidence to ask them to repeat the question. It doesn’t make you look like you’re unsure, it just shows that you’re assertive and that you’ve got confidence.

And what about if you’re in the middle of an answer that you’re giving, and you think ‘hmmm, this isn’t very good.’ What should you do then?

Ok, so if you’re in the middle of an answer as well, and you’re not happy with the way that you’re answering the question, always have the confidence to go back to the top and rephrase that answer. Again, this shows confidence and assertiveness.

Also make sure that you take time with your answer. The nerves can make you give a speedy, a speedy response, and what you want to do is be aware of that and just slow your answer down.

For young people in Ghana, in West Africa, it’s not easy to learn the necessary skills for work and life. The school system has many problems: the quality of teaching is variable, and sometimes teachers don’t come to work at all.

It’s particularly difficult for Ghanaian girls to get a good education. Normally, they’re expected to leave school when they are young, and get married.
