It looks like the typhoon is going to miss us. (It will go around, we will not be affected.)

My team missed the sales target by a few hundred units. (If we had sold several hundred more units, we would have met / reached the target.)

The ball missed the goal by a mile. (a bad shot with no chance of scoring) / by (a few) inches millimeters (good shot, but not good enough).

Literal                   = the main meaning of a word
Figurative            = a different meaning, used to illustrate a description etc

target = an actual target for shooting practice
target = goal, destination

ladder = an actual ladder used to reach high places in a room etc (literal)
ladder to success = a journey upwards (there is no actual ladder) (figurative)

E.g.

Thomas climbed the ladder to success quickly thanks to his hard work and good education.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

a pain in the neck = something that bothers us, something we do not want to deal with.

to hit a wall = to meet an obstacle

to bark up the wrong tree = to address the wrong person about a subject
