Vocabulary

Dark Circles (n): 1- the dark parts that develop under your eyes when you’re tired.
E.g.: Fiona just watched a video on how to get rid of dark circles.

Counterbalance (v): 1- to have an equal but opposite effect on something so that it does not have too much of a particular characteristic.
E.g.: The ugliness of the resort is counterbalanced by the excellence of the skiing.

Shallow (n): 1-  having only a short distance from the top to the bottom. 2- superficial; not showing serious or careful thought.
E.g.: The river was fairly shallow so we were able to walk across it.
E.g.: She told her children to stay in the shallow end (of the swimming pool).
E.g.: I thought the film was pretty shallow.
E.g.: He’s physically attractive, but shallow.

Transgenic (n): 1- a transgenic animal or plant contains one or more genes that have been added from another type of plant or animal.
E.g.: The organs from the transgenic pig are then transplanted into baboons.
E.g.: Europeans have been quicker than Americans to react to transgenic food.
E.g.: Creating transgenic animals is an immensely laborious task under current procedures.
E.g.: Drugs made by transgenic goats are already in human clinical trials.

Racism (n): 1- the belief that people’s qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races.
E.g.: The authorities are taking steps to combat/fight/tackle racism in schools.
E.g.: The report made it plain that institutional racism (= racism in all parts of an organization) is very present in this country.
E.g.: He fought against racism.
